Today I received this information from Keith A. Fontenot, County Agent, Evangeline Parish. He will be holding the Evangeline & St. Landry Crop Production School in January 4, 2012 in Ville Platte, LA. I am not on the program to speak at this meeting, but I will be there to distribute our annual rice entomology survey and to answer any questions you might have about pest management in your rice crop.

Below is the program for the Rice Research Station Field Day to be held on Thursday, June 30, at the Rice Research Station North Farm. An excellent tour has been set up highlighting the research being carried out at the station, on off station trials, and also in cooperation with other universities and researchers. After the tours are completed the Poster sessions, and problems desk will be set up under the equipment shed, and anyone with problem plants is encouraged to bring them out to the field day for a diagnosis. The speakers program will feature results of the activities of the Rice Research Board, a discussion on important issues coming up on the 2012 farm bill, Ducks Unlimited and some of the conservation work with wetlands, and remarks from Dr. Bill Richardson, Chancellor of the LSU AgCenter.

This week we have had calls about chinch bugs and thrips in rice. We also took stand count observations at the Evangeline Parish test site yesterday. This blog posting discusses chinch bugs, aphids, thrips and some natural enemies (fire ants and ladybugs).

It’s almost that time of year again. Today Anna and I met with County Agent Keith Fontenot and Evangeline Parish farmer Kenneth LaHaye to discuss plans for the 2011 rice water weevil demonstration test. The field we will plant had some weedy passes, where a nozzle was accidentally turned off on the boom. This is a good example of why properly-timed burndown herbicides are so important.

County Agent Keith Fontenot just sent me the program and times for the 51st Annual Rice & Soybean School Program, to be held Wednesday, Jan. 5th at the Ville Platte Civic Center. I hope to see many of you at the meeting.

It’s that time of the year again, all the rice folks hunker down for Christmas break and then hit the roads running to winter rice meetings across the state. The first week of January will be busy, followed by a smattering of meetings throughout the month. This post gives information for the meeting plans that have been finalized. Please contact your local county agent for information on meetings in your region. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you in 2011.

This is a reminder about the rice field clinic to be held tomorrow morning. Reeton School road is located about 2 miles south of the caution light on Hwy 13 at the Mamou / Oberlin rd. intersection. At Reeton School rd. turn east, go to the 1st curve, (1 mile), and continue straight on the field rd. You should be able to see vehicles straight ahead of you on the field rd.

The LaHaye farm demonstration site in Evangeline Parish was successfully planted yesterday. Avery Davidson also joined us for a TWILA story about the demonstration test program.
